Swimming Classes at Bishan Swimming Complex

Choosing a class at Bishan comes down to three questions: which format, which level, and which time a coach can actually teach. This page sets out how classes are grouped and what each option costs, so you can ask for the right one.

SwimmingClasses.sg is an independent class-matching service. Bishan Swimming Complex is a public ActiveSG pool; we do not operate it or reserve space in it. For opening hours, see the Bishan pool visitor guide.

Formats compared

Format Ratio Best for Trade-off
Private 1 : 1 Beginners who need full attention, adults, specific goals Highest per-person fee
Pair 2 : 1 Siblings or friends at the same level Both learners must suit the same depth and pace
Small group 3 or more : 1 Children who enjoy learning with peers Less individual feedback; depends on enough learners at that level and time

Group classes at Bishan run only when enough learners at the same level share a time.

How placement works

At the first session the coach checks a short list of skills: safe entry and exit, face in the water, floating front and back, recovering to standing, kicking with support, and any strokes already learned. The learner joins the level that matches, not the level that matches their age.

If a learner turns out to be well ahead of or behind the group, we will suggest moving them, or switching to private lessons.

Levels (typical sequence)

  1. Water confidence: entering safely, breathing out underwater, supported floating.
  2. Independent movement: gliding, kicking, recovering to standing without help.
  3. First strokes: freestyle and backstroke over short distances with relaxed breathing.
  4. Stroke development: breaststroke, longer distances, treading water and survival skills.
  5. Refinement: technique, turns and endurance; butterfly for those ready.

These levels are our teaching sequence. They are not the official SwimSafer stages, though they overlap with SwimSafer skills. An ordinary class is not a SwimSafer assessment.

Schedules

Bishan opens 8:00am–9:30pm on most days and closes on Thursdays (except public holidays). Classes take place only at times a coach has confirmed. Weekday late afternoons and weekend mornings are the most requested, so they fill first.

Fees

Four-lesson packages for children (45 minutes) cost $280 private, $190 per person for a pair and $140 per person for a group of three or more; adult and toddler rates differ. Full table: Swim2u lesson prices. Pool admission is paid separately to ActiveSG by each learner.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Who will the coach be, and what qualifications do they hold?
  • How many learners will be in the class, at most?
  • Where do we meet, and who collects my child afterwards?
  • What happens if the pool is cleared for lightning?
  • How do make-ups work?
