SwimSafer Stage 1 Preparation in Singapore
Stage 1 is an early foundation in water confidence, safe behaviour and basic movement. A learner’s readiness should be judged through supervised in-water observation—not age, an online checklist or a promise of certification.

Who may need Stage 1 preparation?
It can suit a learner who is new to structured lessons, uncomfortable putting the face in water or still developing calm breathing, balance and safe entry habits. An instructor should first check comfort, communication and pool suitability.
Foundation areas to discuss with an instructor
- Following pool rules and responding to instructions.
- Entering and leaving the water safely in the lesson setting.
- Breathing out in water without panic or rushing.
- Developing supported balance, floating and recovery.
- Moving a short distance with control appropriate to current ability.
These are broad preparation themes, not an official test sequence. Exact activities and assessment criteria can change.
Fear, confidence and parental expectations
A cautious learner should not be forced underwater or compared with another child. Progress may first look like entering calmly, listening to the instructor or recovering from a float with less support. Parents should ask how the coach handles distress and communicates progress.
Private or small-group preparation?
Private lessons can provide more pacing control for fear, attention or communication needs. A suitable small group can build social confidence and routine. The safer choice depends on supervision, pool depth, learner compatibility and instructor attention—not the format name alone.
What to share in an enquiry
- Learner age and previous lesson experience.
- Whether the learner can put the face in, float or recover with support.
- Any fear, sensory, communication or health consideration.
- Preferred area, pool and possible lesson times.
