SwimSafer Stage 2 Preparation Classes
SwimSafer Stage 2 builds on Stage 1. Learners swim longer distances on the front and back, combine floats, rollovers and treading water into one sequence, recover an object from chest-deep water, and practise using a personal flotation device (PFD) while dressed in clothes.
SwimmingClasses.sg arranges private and small-group lessons for learners working towards Stage 2. In a small group, learners are matched by stage and confidence so that everyone is practising the same sequence. Children who can already float and glide comfortably but still struggle with distance, back swimming or deeper water are usually the ones who benefit most from focused Stage 2 practice.
At the first lesson the instructor checks which parts of the Stage 2 sequence the learner can already do and which need work, for example the 25m front swim, the 15m back swim or the PFD sequence. Later lessons concentrate on those gaps. Ask us to confirm the current lesson fee, pool and schedule before booking.

SwimSafer Singapore's Stage 2
Stage 2 is usually the point where learners move from basic water confidence to swimming a set distance without stopping. Most Stage 2 preparation focuses on three things: stamina for the 25m front swim, comfort on the back, and staying calm in deeper water without goggles.
Lessons are normally booked as a package at a regular weekly time. Practising once or twice a week with the same instructor helps learners keep the skills they built in the previous lesson. Readiness for assessment should be agreed with the instructor; there is no fixed number of lessons that guarantees a pass.

Navigating the Waters with Confidence
Small-group or private? A small group suits learners at the same stage who are reasonably confident; seeing other children attempt the same skills is often motivating. One-to-one lessons suit learners who are nervous without goggles, are well behind or ahead of others, or need a particular skill broken down step by step.
We recognise that learners progress at different rates. Ask us to confirm the current lesson fee, instructor availability and the skills to practise for Stage 2. Tell us the learner’s age, whether Stage 1 has been completed, and which parts of the sequence feel difficult, so we can suggest a suitable class.
SwimSafer Stage 2 Test Sequence
The outline below summarises the Stage 2 skills. Always check the current official SwimSafer requirements before an assessment, as criteria can be updated.

1. Swim 25m on front(alternating arms and legs or simultaneous arms and legs)
2. Swim on the back 15m (alternating arms and legs or simultaneous arms and legs)
Sequence 2A (w/o goggles)
1. Enter the water with step-in entry
2. Front float for 10 secs,
3. Swim 5m on front, rollover
4. Perform back float for 10 sec
5. Swim 5m on back,
6. Scull, float or tread water for 30sec
7. Recover an object (in chest deep water)
8. Resurface and exit safely from pool
Sequence 2B (w/o goggles)
1. Swim 15m using any survival stroke and exit safely from water

Type of Swimming Programs
Who Stage 2 Preparation Suits
Stage 2 preparation suits learners who have completed Stage 1, or who can already enter the water safely, float on the front and back and swim a short distance. If a learner cannot yet put their face in the water or float unaided, it is usually better to work on Stage 1 skills first.
SwimSafer is a national water-safety programme. If your child’s school has its own swimming or water-safety requirements, check them directly with the school; SwimmingClasses.sg lessons are not a substitute for school-arranged programmes.
Common Difficulties at Stage 2
- Swimming without goggles: some children are confident with goggles but hesitate without them. Short, regular practice without goggles helps.
- The 25m front swim: learners often stop because breathing is not yet relaxed. Lessons work on a steady breathing rhythm before adding distance.
- Back swimming: many learners sink at the hips. Practice focuses on head position and a steady kick.
- Treading or sculling for 30 seconds: this needs calm, efficient movement rather than strength.
- The PFD sequence: fitting a PFD correctly and swimming in clothes feels unfamiliar, so it is worth practising before an assessment.
Helping Your Child Prepare
Start with a skills check
Ask the instructor to observe the whole Stage 2 sequence once and tell you which parts are secure and which need work. This gives a clear plan for the lessons that follow.
Practise regularly
A consistent weekly lesson time helps learners retain skills. Long gaps between lessons usually mean the first part of each lesson is spent relearning.
Practise the full sequence
Skills that work individually can fall apart when done in sequence. Before an assessment, learners should practise the sequences in order and at the required distances.
Agree readiness with the instructor
If the instructor feels a learner is not yet ready, a few more lessons usually leads to a calmer, more successful assessment than rushing.
What Comes After Stage 2
After Stage 2, the next step is SwimSafer Stage 3, which asks for longer swims, more survival skills and more time in deeper water. Learners who have just completed Stage 2 can often stay in the same small group if the other learners are progressing at a similar pace; otherwise we can suggest a better-matched group or private lessons.
Learners who want to improve stroke technique rather than follow the SwimSafer stages can also ask about general kids swimming lessons.
